Tell your story

# An annual report prompt that opens with a story

Turn your year’s worth of data, stories and milestones into annual report sections you can drop into your designer’s template.

## Basic prompt

163 words

```
Write the narrative sections of our annual report, ready to drop into our designer's template. Open with a story, not a statistic or a letter from our executive director. For each program, weave the data into the story. Present our financials as a story of community investment, and close with where we're headed next year. This is stewardship, so no ask. Use exact numbers, and keep the sections short and clear.
What you need to know:
- the fiscal year and the programs to cover
- our outcome data for each program
- at least one true story or quote
- our financial summary: revenue, donor count and key sources
- a goal for next year
- any quote from our executive director or board chair
You may already know some of this from our past chats, my files or connected tools. Use what you have. If you don't know something, ask me, one question at a time, and don't make anything up.
```

## Supercharged prompt

```
You're helping me write the narrative sections of our annual report. I want to work the way If Possible (ifpossible.ai) teaches nonprofit teams to do real work AI first. Their guide for this kind of work is "Let AI build the board report you always wanted" (https://ifpossible.ai/articles/ai-board-reports-and-dashboards), and their full library of guides is at https://ifpossible.ai/articles. If you can read web pages, read that guide first and treat its method as our playbook.
The If Possible method, as we'll use it today:
1. Context before content. Before you draft anything, build a short brief of who we are: our mission, the people we serve, our programs, our real outcomes and our voice. (If Possible calls this a Mission Brain: the memory AI reads before every task.) Use what you already know about us, and ask me for whatever is missing.
2. Talk it out instead of typing it out. I'll talk through the year: what happened, what surprised us and what I'm proudest of. If I have a transcript of that, I'll give it to you. Pull the through-line out of my own words.
3. Ask before you assume. Ask me your questions one at a time, the most important first, and wait for each answer.
4. I'm in the director's chair. Give me two or three through-lines for the year, with your recommendation and a one-line reason. Don't hand me one finished answer to forward unread (If Possible calls that being a "meat proxy").
5. An outline, then sections I can react to. Show me the outline first. Then write the story opening, the program sections, the financial narrative and the forward look, one at a time, in lengths that fit our template.
6. Check your own work. Never inflate a number. List every figure so I can match it to our records, flag anything you guessed and tell me whose story each section centers.
7. Make it repeatable. When we finish, write down the steps and the data we needed, so next year's report starts here.
What you need to know:
- the fiscal year and the programs to cover
- our outcome data for each program
- at least one true story or quote
- our financial summary: revenue, donor count and key sources
- a goal for next year
- any quote from our executive director or board chair
You may already know some of this from our past chats, my files or connected tools. Check there first and tell me what you found. For anything you don't know, ask me, one question at a time, the most important first. Start now.
## Supercharge it
We’ll add the If Possible method to your prompt. **More context in. A better output out.**
- Context before content
- Talk it out
- Questions first
- Director’s chair
- + 3 more
1. Context before content: a short brief of who you are (a Mission Brain)
2. Talk it out: the year in your own words
3. Questions first, one at a time
4. Director's chair: through-lines and a recommendation
5. An outline, then one section at a time
6. It lists every figure and says whose story it tells
7. It saves the steps for next year's report
It points your AI to our free articles as its guide. Read every word before you use it.
## What it will ask you
Nothing to fill in. Your AI may already know some of this. If it doesn’t, it asks, one question at a time.
- The fiscal year and the programs to cover
- Our outcome data for each program
- At least one true story or quote
- Our financial summary: revenue, donor count and key sources
- A goal for next year
- Any quote from our executive director or board chair
It goes faster once your AI has your [Mission Brain Brief](https://ifpossible.ai/prompts/nonprofit-organizational-context) and [Brand Voice Guide](https://ifpossible.ai/prompts/nonprofit-brand-voice-guide).
## What it’s for
It writes the narrative sections of your annual report. For each program it weaves data into story, and it presents your financials and closes on a forward-looking statement. It opens with a story, not a statistic or a letter from the ED. This is stewardship, so there’s no ask.
## When to use it
- It’s time to write the annual report and your data is scattered.
- You have program outcomes and at least one good story, and need them to read as one piece.
- Your designer needs copy that’s ready to drop in.
## Before you use it
Use exact data. Hold it to figures you’d stand behind in front of your board, and check them before the draft goes to your designer.
